A Short History…
It started out when a small group of about 6 driving instructors decided that it would be a good idea to get together one evening and discuss driving instruction issues and swap test experiences with each other. The initial group lacked momentum but in 1993 a few more driving instructors joined the original group and they changed the meeting venue from the British Legion to its still current venue the R.A.F.A. Club in the heart of Chelmsford. The intention was to make the group more structured and to invite others to join. To give the group an identity a name was needed and eventually the name ‘Driving Instructors Club Essex’ was created. It was only when someone wrote down the initial letters of the new name that it was realised that the letters spelt DICE and so the DICE logo was created. Being Essex based it seemed appropriate that one face of the dice would feature the emblem of Essex – the 3 Seaxes (a seax is the Old English name for the fighting knife used by the Saxons) – and the other visible faces would have the red ‘L’ for learner. D.I.C.E. was officially born!
One member from the original group is still with us. Over the years we have had 3 Chairmen and 1 Chairwoman and our current Treasurer has served over 10 years to date. Longevity is a feature of membership proving that the club serves a useful purpose and now has over 120 members.
Our Social Secretary maintains an interesting calendar of events: golf days; go cart racing; skid pan experience; greyhound racing; ten pin bowling; charity quiz nights; and, of course, the Christmas party are just a few.
Meetings are bi-monthly and our Club Secretary finds and invites speakers to attend our meetings to provide us with insights, training, and information about subjects relating to our industry. We have had presentations from the Police, the Fire Brigade, Lesson Planning, Essex Chronicle, the Driving Standards Agency, the Essex Casualty Reduction Board, National Speed Awareness, and Coaching are just some of the many topics presented.
Many of our members have gained new pupil business through the club’s website which is maintained by our Webmaster who also administers the club’s totally private Facebook page.
We endeavour to keep a good harmonious relationship with our local driving examiners and regularly have dialogue with the Test Centre management.
